Christian Dior, the prominent fashion label owned by luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, has made a strategic move by acquiring Art Lab, an Italian leather treatment specialist. Art Lab, based in Santa Croce sull’Arno in Tuscany, is known for its expertise in digital printing and hand-made treatments on leather. The details of the acquisition, including the percentage of stake and value, have not been disclosed.

Art Lab was originally established in the late 1990s by Marcello Tatoni, who pioneered the concept of digitally printing directly onto leather. Under the leadership of Tatoni’s children, Ilaria Sassetti and Dario Tatoni, along with engineer Andrea Balleri, the company has grown into a renowned art laboratory. Today, Art Lab employs close to 70 individuals and collaborates with some of the world’s most prestigious fashion labels. With its advanced equipment and ability to offer a complete finishing cycle, the company generates approximately €5 million in revenue.

For Christian Dior, this acquisition strengthens its manufacturing capabilities, particularly in Italy where the brand produces high-end luxury goods. The Parisian label, which has been experiencing consistent sales growth, also plans to establish a new factory for men’s footwear in Fossò, near Venice. This will complement the existing facility that manufactures Dior’s women’s shoes. Additionally, Christian Dior operates two leather goods factories in Naples, another in Florence, and a handbag factory in Lugagnano Val D’Arda, between Parma and Piacenza. Earlier this year, the brand opened a handbag factory in Casarano, in the Salento region of Puglia, in collaboration with local producer Antonio Filograna-Sergio.

In addition to Christian Dior, LVMH’s Métiers d’Art division has been investing in the Italian leather sector. The division recently acquired Ally Projects, an exotic leather tannery also located in Santa Croce sull’Arno, similar to Art Lab. It also acquired a stake in high-end leather ready-to-wear producer Roban’s, based in Tuscany.

Christian Dior’s acquisition of Art Lab demonstrates the brand’s dedication to enhancing its manufacturing capabilities and ensuring the production of exceptional quality luxury goods. By strategically acquiring companies like Art Lab, the brand solidifies its position as a leader in the fashion industry and sets itself up for continued success in the future.
