Ebay has expanded its authentication services by acquiring Sneaker Con Digital, the authentication business of Sneaker Con. The acquisition, which was finalized on November 24, 2021, builds upon the existing partnership between Ebay and Sneaker Con, and strengthens Ebay’s Authenticity Guarantee program.

Back in October 2020, Ebay introduced authentication for sneakers priced over $100, with industry experts from Sneaker Con appraising eligible footwear. Since then, more than 1.55 million sneakers have been authenticated through the program. This success has resulted in significant growth in the sneaker category on Ebay.

Jordan Sweetnam, the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Ebay North America, expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating that it enables Ebay to provide a higher level of trust and confidence to every transaction. Currently, Ebay offers Authenticity Guarantee services for sneakers, luxury watches, and handbags.

Sneaker Con Digital was launched in 2018 as a complement to Sneaker Con’s event organizing activities. It operates in several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Germany. However, the events business, which has organized over 100 Sneaker Con meets since its establishment in 2009, is not included in the deal with Ebay. Alan Vinogradov, the CEO and co-founder of Sneaker Con, emphasized his dedication to providing premier global events for the sneaker community.

By acquiring Sneaker Con Digital, Ebay aims to compete with other marketplaces in the resale industry, such as The RealReal, Poshmark, and StockX, which also offer authentication services to ensure the authenticity of the products being sold. This move reflects Ebay’s commitment to transforming its platform and enhancing trust for its customers.

The specific financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed. Nevertheless, the partnership between Ebay and Sneaker Con is expected to reinforce Ebay’s position as a trusted marketplace for buying and selling sneakers. With 1.9 million pairs of sneakers available for purchase on the platform every day, Ebay is poised to capitalize further on the thriving sneaker market.
