Ermenegildo Zegna, the renowned luxury menswear brand, has recently made significant changes to its brand portfolio. After acquiring Thom Browne in 2018, the Italian fashion manufacturer and retailer has now sold Agnona, its women’s ready-to-wear brand specializing in knitwear. However, Ermenegildo Zegna has retained a 30% minority stake in Agnona, indicating that the brand will not completely sever ties with the Zegna family.

The sale of Agnona represents a new direction for the brand’s future development, while also ensuring its continuity. Ermenegildo Zegna Holditalia has sold 70% of the label to Roberto and Stefano Aimone. Roberto is the husband of Laura Zegna, who belongs to the third generation of the Zegna family leading the company, while Stefano has worked as a designer for various luxury labels, including Z Zegna. The Aimone duo also launched their own high-end menswear brand, Aimone, in 2015. They will now take on the roles of Agnona’s new executive president and creative director, respectively. Alessandra Carra, the current CEO of Agnona, will continue to support the Aimone family until Stefano takes over as CEO.

Simon Holloway, the English-American designer who has served as Agnona’s creative director since 2015, will be leaving the company to pursue new professional challenges. Holloway succeeded Stefano Pilati in the role and has been instrumental in preserving the brand’s timeless elegance. Under his direction, Agnona even unveiled its first men’s collection in February 2020, reintroducing menswear after a 20-year hiatus.

Despite acquiring Laneri Agnona, a historic manufacturer specializing in women’s knitwear, in 1999, the Zegna group has faced challenges in reviving the Agnona brand. Holloway’s efforts were focused on maintaining the label’s timeless elegance, but it struggled to gain traction in the market.

The sale of Agnona to the Aimone family marks a new chapter for the brand, with hopes of revitalizing its presence in the luxury fashion industry. Ermenegildo Zegna’s retention of a minority stake reflects its commitment to the brand’s future success. With the Aimone family at the helm, Agnona aims to redefine itself and recapture the attention of the fashion world.
