In a groundbreaking collaboration, Yoox Net-A-Porter (YNAP), Zalando, and About You have joined forces to launch a significant climate action initiative within the fashion industry. The primary goal of this initiative is to tackle carbon emissions and promote sustainability throughout their value chains and across the entire fashion sector. Building on their existing commitments through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), YNAP, Zalando, and About You are now introducing a customized learning platform to assist their brand partners in setting climate targets that align with scientific guidelines.

This innovative program, which will be made available to brand partners at no cost, will serve as a step-by-step guide in measuring emissions, establishing ambitious reduction targets, and attaining the necessary approval. Furthermore, it will create a dedicated space for fashion brands to connect with one another and engage with sustainability experts. The collaboration is made possible through a partnership with Quantis, a leading environmental sustainability consultancy specializing in climate expertise.

The platform is set to launch as a pilot with select brand partners this autumn, followed by its full rollout to all eligible brand partners next year. YNAP, Zalando, and About You envision the initiative as a potential industry-wide endeavor. Recognizing that a significant portion of the fashion industry’s carbon footprint stems from upstream activities like material production and processing, the collaboration aims to specifically address this issue to make a substantial impact on reducing emissions.

Aside from the environmental benefits, the partners highlight the advantages for companies in reducing their carbon emissions. By doing so, these companies are preparing themselves for future growth, adapting to evolving regulatory frameworks, boosting investor confidence, and fostering innovation. Hannes Wiese, CEO of About You, revealed that as of July 2022, over 1,500 companies had their targets approved by the SBTi, while 46.6% of its partners had their greenhouse gas emissions targets approved by February 2022. Geoffroy Lefebvre, CEO of YNAP, emphasized that the collaboration between YNAP, Zalando, and About You enables a more unified approach in emission reduction across the luxury and fashion industries.

David Schneider, co-CEO at Zalando, emphasized the significance of decarbonizing supply chains through partnerships with suppliers, brands, logistics providers, packaging partners, and even competitors. He believes that such collaboration is a powerful catalyst for driving substantial change in the fashion industry. Zalando aims to have 90% of its partners (based on emissions) set science-based targets by 2025, and the introduction of the new learning platform marks a key milestone toward achieving this goal.

With YNAP, Zalando, and About You leading the way in this climate action initiative, they set an example for other fashion brands to follow suit. The collective effort and knowledge sharing will not only benefit the environment but also contribute to the long-term sustainability and growth of the fashion industry as a whole. Through collaboration, brands can make a substantial impact on reducing carbon emissions and pave the way for a more sustainable future for fashion.
