Fashion Makes Change is a newly launched brand-led community platform that aims to address the pressing climate crisis in the fashion industry and empower women workers. The organization seeks to create a transformative ecosystem by bringing together brands, non-profits, consumers, and supporting industries to take action on social and environmental issues. Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Fashion Makes Change aims to drive progress in the fashion industry in the next decade.

Initially, the organization will focus on goals related to good health and wellbeing, quality education, gender equality, and decent work and economic growth. As part of its commitment to women’s empowerment, Fashion Makes Change will support the Empower@Work Collaborative. This collaborative effort involves the UN’s ILO-IFC Better Work, BSR’s HERproject, CARE International, and Gap Inc.’s P.A.C.E program. Together, they work to promote gender equity and empower women workers in global supply chains. The collaboration has developed a Worker Training Toolkit, offering educational resources on leadership, financial literacy, planning, and decision making.

Fashion Makes Change has also established a network of brands and retailers dedicated to educating women in the global supply chain by 2030. On International Women’s Day, March 8, the organization will hold its first activation, encouraging consumers to donate to Empower@Work through participating companies in the network. By joining forces, these brands, customers, and non-profits hope to enact meaningful change on a global scale.

Cara Smyth, Chair of Fashion Makes Change, stressed the urgency of the initiative, stating that incremental change is no longer enough. With limited time before irreversible global warming, swift action is essential. Smyth believes that education is crucial for building resilient communities and achieving sustainability. She expressed her confidence in the power of collaboration and catalytic ecosystems in driving the necessary changes.

Fashion Makes Change is a project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and receives support from Avery Dennison, PR Consulting, and the Accessories Council. By leveraging the influence of the fashion industry and combining efforts, this platform aims to make a significant and positive impact on women workers and the environment.
