Fenwick, the renowned department store in Newcastle, is preparing for a major transformation as it celebrates its 140th anniversary. The flagship store, which holds an iconic status within the community, will undergo an extensive £40 million makeover in the coming years. The first phase will focus on the ground floor, which will be redesigned around its central escalators. The beauty hall, fragrance department, and accessories department will be the initial areas to undergo this transformation, with completion expected within the next 18 months.

John Edgar, CEO of Fenwick, explained that the decision to prioritize the ground floor renovations is based on the fact that it constitutes the majority of their business. The investment in the store’s refurbishment is seen as a significant step in redefining the retail landscape in Newcastle city center and providing the city with the exceptional shopping experience it deserves. Fenwick’s commitment to the community is further evident through their collaboration with Newcastle City Council and Gateshead Initiative to support the overall regeneration of the city.

Alongside the renovation plans, Fenwick’s Newcastle store has organized a range of exciting events to commemorate its 140th anniversary. The celebrations will commence with a live circus performance on Saturday, followed by an exhibition showcasing selected items from the Fenwick archive. This exhibition aims to delve into the rich history of the store while looking towards its future. Additionally, there will be exclusive collaborations with renowned fashion brands like Edeline Lee, Rixo, Paul Smith, Never Fully Dressed, and Fred Perry.

In line with their dedication to supporting emerging talent, Fenwick has partnered with fashion students from Northumbria University to create bespoke pieces inspired by the Fenwick archive and brand story. Furthermore, the store has launched a podcast series titled ‘The Woman Who…,’ narrated by actress Zawe Ashton. This series will celebrate inspiring women from the past and present who embody female empowerment.

Kieran McBride, store director of Fenwick Newcastle, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming events and emphasized the pride Fenwick takes in being an integral part of the Newcastle community. As the anniversary celebrations progress, more events will be announced, further heightening the excitement.

Ultimately, Fenwick’s substantial investment in renovating its Newcastle flagship store and the arrangements made for its anniversary festivities demonstrate the store’s unwavering commitment to providing an exceptional retail experience for its customers while also contributing to the local community. As Fenwick proudly celebrates its 140 years of success, it also looks towards the future with renewed vigor and anticipation.
