Hellessy, founded by Sylvie Millstein in her Soho studio in 2012, is a brand known for its empowering and wearable clothes for various occasions. Millstein, originally from Paris, had a successful career as a top merchandiser for prestigious brands like Chanel, Givenchy, and Harrods before starting Hellessy. Her time in Japan further refined her sense of luxury and style.

Each collection from Hellessy is produced locally and ethically in New York, with a strong focus on attention to detail. The brand embodies the laid-back glamour of Lower Manhattan and has been featured in renowned publications such as US Vogue, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar. Celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski, Priyanka Chopra, Cara Delevingne, Kristen Stewart, and Rihanna are notable fans of Hellessy.

For the upcoming spring collection, Millstein showcased dresses in fuchsia satin that elegantly draped around the body. The collection also included summer suits, jersey bustiers with exaggerated volumes, and novelty chinos made from archival materials sourced from renowned suppliers. While Hellessy is not yet widely known in Europe, it has already secured partnerships with major retailers like Neiman Marcus, Farfetch, and Lane Crawford.

In a recent interview, Sylvie Millstein discussed her journey with Hellessy and her vision for the brand. She stated that her move to Miami was prompted by a desire for a change in scenery, although the brand’s studio remains in Soho. Millstein emphasized the importance of creativity and having her own label, which led her to establish Hellessy in 2012.

The brand’s name, Hellessy, is a combination of Millstein’s two sons’ names, Hendrix and Lennox. Starting her career with minimal knowledge of garment construction, pattern making, and fabrics, she gradually honed her skills and gained an understanding of what women desire in terms of price and material. Millstein draws inspiration from downtown Manhattan’s vibrant energy and aims to dress a cool, downtown woman with a little edge.

Empowering women through fashion is the primary goal of Hellessy. Millstein wants women to feel beautiful and confident in her designs, which feature long sleeves, beautiful necklines, and effortless silhouettes. She envisions her clothes as pieces that women can easily grab from their wardrobe for any occasion. The latest collection was inspired by the Superblue art exhibit and James Tyrell installation in Miami, shaping its creative direction.

Although there are no immediate plans for menswear, Millstein enjoys reinventing classic pieces, particularly men’s white shirts. In a previous collection, she experimented with oversized shirts adorned with embroideries and holes, resulting in beautifully draped sleeves.

Millstein, originally from Versailles, France, moved to Japan and started her career as an internal buyer. She fell in love with the country and frequently traveled to Paris. When not working, she enjoys vacationing in Turks and Caicos Islands and Aspen, spending time with her husband and four sons.

Rick Owens and his unique designs are among Millstein’s favorite designers. She also admires Demna Gvasalia’s innovative approach at Balenciaga and Pierpaolo Piccioli’s vibrant use of colors at Valentino.

In terms of restaurants, Millstein enjoys dining at Mr. Chow in Soho, Lure Fishbar, and Sant Ambroeus. While she recently relocated to Miami, she mentioned that she will need to learn how to drive in her new city.

Overall, Sylvie Millstein’s journey with Hellessy showcases her passion for design and commitment to creating empowering and wearable fashion. With her attention to detail and understanding of women’s desires, Millstein has established Hellessy as a brand synonymous with laid-back glamour and elegance.
