A recent glimpse into Kanye West’s future plans for his brand, Yeezy, has sparked intrigue and speculation. The renowned rapper, who now goes by the name Ye, took to Instagram to publicly express his dissatisfaction with his business partners, Adidas and Gap. In a series of posts, he even hinted at the possibility of severing ties with these major companies. Ye further elaborated on his comments in a conversation with Bloomberg, where he emphasized his desire to venture into new territory and create a new industry without any intermediaries.

“It’s time for me to go it alone,” Ye stated. “I have generated substantial profits for these companies, and they have reciprocated. Together, we have revolutionized the apparel industry with groundbreaking designs like the round jacket, the foam runner, and the game-changing slides. But now, it’s time for me to take things to the next level by creating a whole new industry where there are no barriers between me and my audience.”

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Ye’s previous pronouncements, it appears that his existing collaborations are not abruptly ending. Bloomberg reports that Yeezy’s contract with Adidas remains in effect until 2026, while the agreement with Gap extends until 2030. Currently, Ye’s company continues to receive significant royalties from the sales of Yeezy products by both entities.

An investment bank UBS study estimates that the Adidas-Yeezy contract alone contributed $191 million in royalties to Ye’s company in 2020. This considerable amount was generated from Adidas selling over $1.7 billion worth of Yeezy products. Moreover, Ye has expressed a keen interest in establishing Yeezy stores and is already working on new projects alongside former Adidas executive Eric Liedtke, all without the backing of a major corporate entity.

However, Ye has frequently voiced his dissatisfaction with the level of involvement he has in making strategic decisions regarding Yeezy products at Gap and Adidas. This raises the question of whether he will employ his influence and fame to exert further pressure on these two companies. Worth noting is the fact that both Gap and Adidas are undergoing significant management changes, potentially creating an opportunity for Ye to redefine the terms of his partnerships with these influential players in the fashion industry.
