According to Sovereign Centros, the owner of Merry Hill shopping center in Dudley, West Midlands, the mall has had a successful year in 2023. Despite the current challenges faced by the UK shopping center retail industry, Merry Hill has managed to solidify its position as one of the top 10 retail and leisure destinations in the country. This achievement was made possible through the completion of 65 leasing deals, covering over 330,000 square feet of space.

In addition to securing leasing deals, Merry Hill also witnessed a growth in sales and footfall. Compared to 2022, sales in 2023 saw a 7% increase, with December trading up by 6.5% year-on-year. Footfall also saw a significant rise, increasing by 9.4% throughout the year, with consistently strong visitor numbers. This positive growth trend continued into December.

Out of the 65 leasing deals, 30 brands opened in Merry Hill in 2023, accounting for over 30% of the mall’s total units. This included prominent brands such as Nike Unite, Kenji, a homewares and gifting brand, and the upcoming launch of beauty and home brand Rituals. Furthermore, four additional brands have exchanged contracts for leasing at Merry Hill, with plans to open in 2024. An important development is the re-anchoring of the former Debenhams store, which will move away from fashion and beauty. The ground floor space will be occupied by Harvey Norman, a lifestyle, technology, and entertainment retailer, and fitness operator Xtrafit will make its UK debut in a space exceeding 40,000 square feet.

Graeme Jones, Director at Sovereign Centros, expressed his satisfaction with Merry Hill’s success in 2023. He highlighted the center’s ability to attract top-notch operators across various sectors, including retail, dining, and leisure. Jones emphasized the positive results in footfall and sales and affirmed that Merry Hill will continue its ambitious approach in 2024, aiming to provide an exceptional experience for visitors.
