Shiseido, the Japanese beauty giant, is expanding its presence in the European skincare market through the acquisition of Gallinée, a specialized skincare brand that uses active probiotics to enhance the skin. The deal was conducted by Shiseido Europe and follows the successful launch of Shiseido’s natural cosmetics brand, Ulé, in France.

Gallinée, founded in 2016 by French pharmacist Marie Drago and based in London, had previously attracted the attention of Unilever, who became the main investor in 2018. The financial details of Shiseido’s acquisition have not been disclosed.

Gallinée’s skincare products contain a patented blend of prebiotics, probiotics, and lactic acid that nourish the skin’s “good” bacteria. The brand currently offers seventeen products for the face, body, hair, and oral hygiene, primarily available in France and England.

As part of the acquisition, Marie Drago will join Shiseido’s Europe, Middle East, and Africa teams as the creative director of Gallinée. She will report to Franck Marilly, the President and CEO of Shiseido EMEA and Global Fragrance.

For the 2022 fiscal year, Shiseido aims to achieve sales of 1,070 billion yen, representing a 6% increase from the previous year. Gallinée does not disclose its sales figures.

By acquiring Gallinée, Shiseido aims to expand its portfolio and solidify its position in the European skincare market. The company recognizes the growing importance of probiotics and the microbiome in skincare and seeks to meet consumer demand in this area. Through Gallinée’s products, Shiseido can offer innovative solutions that harness the power of microbiome science for healthier, more balanced skin.

This acquisition reflects Shiseido’s commitment to investing in emerging brands and technologies that have the potential to disrupt the beauty industry. By partnering with Gallinée and leveraging its expertise in probiotics, Shiseido positions itself as a leader in the future of skincare.

Overall, Shiseido’s acquisition of Gallinée demonstrates the company’s dedication to innovation and its strategic focus on the European skincare market. With the addition of Gallinée’s probiotic skincare products, Shiseido is well-positioned to meet the increasing demand for science-backed, natural skincare solutions that promote healthier, more radiant skin.
