Biography
Alessandro Michele was born in Rome, Italy in 1972. He grew up with a passion for fashion and design, and after finishing high school, he decided to study fashion design at the Accademia di Costume e di Moda in Rome. After completing his studies, Michele began his career at Fendi in 2002, where he worked as a freelance designer for the accessories department.
In 2008, Michele was hired by Gucci as a senior accessories designer. During his time at Gucci, he proved himself to be a talented and innovative designer, and in 2015, he was named the creative director of the brand. Under Michele’s leadership, Gucci underwent a dramatic transformation, becoming one of the world’s most popular and influential luxury fashion brands.
Michele’s vision for Gucci was one that celebrated individuality, diversity, and inclusivity. He created designs that were bold, eclectic, and often androgynous, challenging traditional gender norms in fashion. His collections were sophisticated and playful, emulating his own personal style, which he described as a mix of “nerd, English eccentric, and Parisian bourgeois.”
Michele’s use of bright colors, bold patterns, and unexpected materials brought new life to the Gucci brand, attracting a new generation of customers, including many young people who previously saw Gucci as an outdated brand. His reinvention of the brand was hugely successful, and he has won numerous awards for his work, including the British Fashion Awards’ International Designer of the Year in 2015 and 2016.
Aside from his work at Gucci, Michele is also known for his love of art and design. He is an avid collector of vintage objects, including handbags, jewelry, and other accessories, which he often incorporates into his designs. He has also collaborated with numerous artists and designers, including Coco Capitán, Jayde Fish, and Ignasi Monreal, to create unique collections that blend fashion with art.
Despite his success and fame, Michele remains a down-to-earth and humble person, known for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others. He often uses his platform to promote social causes, such as sustainability, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ rights. He is also a proud supporter of the arts, and his collections often pay tribute to great artists and designers throughout history.
In recent years, Michele has expanded his influence beyond fashion, becoming a cultural icon in his own right. He has inspired countless young people with his vision of individuality and inclusivity, and his impact is felt not only in the fashion industry but also in popular culture and society as a whole. Despite the uncertain times we live in, Michele’s creative spirit and passion for life remain a source of inspiration and hope for many.
