Biography
Anna Wintour is a British-American journalist and editor, best known for her role as the editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine. She was born on November 3rd, 1949, in Hampstead, London, England, to a British father and American mother. Her father, Charles Wintour, was the editor of the London Evening Standard, and Anna grew up surrounded by people interested in journalism and the media.
After attending various schools in London, Anna went on to study at North London Collegiate School, where she developed an interest in fashion. She began her career in journalism at the age of 15, working as a junior fashion editor at Harpers & Queen magazine. She later moved on to work at New York Magazine, where she became fashion editor in 1975.
In 1983, Anna was appointed as the editor-in-chief of British Vogue, a role she held for two years before leaving to join American Vogue as editor-in-chief. Under her leadership, the magazine has become one of the most influential fashion publications in the world, renowned for its exclusive photographs and articles.
In addition to her work at Vogue, Anna has also been a strong supporter of the fashion industry throughout her career. She has been a judge on the reality television show Project Runway, and has also served as a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute since 1995.
Despite her success, Anna is often portrayed as a tough and demanding boss, known for her exacting standards and high expectations. Her signature style, which includes her trademark bob haircut and designer sunglasses, has also become famous in its own right.
Anna has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career, including the Order of the British Empire, which she was awarded in 2008 for her services to British journalism and fashion. In 2019, she was also appointed as a dame commander of the Order of the British Empire, in recognition of her contributions to the fashion industry.
Throughout her career, Anna has remained a powerful and influential figure in the fashion world, with many aspiring young fashion designers and editors looking up to her as a role model. Her signature style and uncompromising approach to fashion journalism have made her a true icon of the industry.
