Biography
Bernard Arnault was born on March 5, 1949, in Roubaix, France. He is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of LVMH Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton SE, which is one of the largest luxury goods conglomerates in the world. Arnault grew up in a wealthy French family and attended the École Polytechnique in Paris, where he studied engineering.
In 1971, Arnault joined his family’s construction company, Ferret-Savinel, and helped to transform it into a major real estate development firm. In 1984, he founded his own company, Financière Agache, which later acquired Christian Dior. Under Arnault’s leadership, Dior became one of the world’s most powerful fashion houses, and he eventually merged it with LVMH in 1987.
Over the years, Arnault has acquired a number of other high-end brands, such as Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, and Celine. He has also invested in a range of other industries, including wine, jewelry, and hotels. In 2018, LVMH reported revenue of over $52 billion, making it the largest luxury goods company in the world.
Arnault has been involved in a number of philanthropic endeavors throughout his career. In 2013, he made a €200 million ($226 million) donation to the Fondation Louis Vuitton, a contemporary art museum in Paris, which he also founded. He has also supported the restoration of the Palace of Versailles and the Paris Opera.
Arnault has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, the highest honor that can be awarded in France. He has also been named the “Person of the Year” by both the Financial Times and Forbes magazine.
Despite his immense wealth, Arnault has faced criticism over the years for his involvement in the fashion industry and for his personal wealth. In 2019, he was briefly the target of protests in France, as some criticized him for his tax avoidance and for his ties to President Emmanuel Macron.
Arnault is married and has five children. He is known for his love of art, and has one of the largest private collections in the world, which includes works by Picasso, Warhol, and Dalí. He also owns vineyards in France and has a passion for wine. He is the author of a book on the subject, called “The Future of Wine”.
