Biography
François-Henri Pinault is a French businessman born on May 28, 1962, in Rennes, France. He is currently the CEO of Kering, a luxury fashion group that owns iconic brands such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Balenciaga. Pinault comes from a family of entrepreneurs, and his father is the founder of the Pinault-Printemps-Redoute Group.
Pinault received a degree in Management from HEC Paris, one of the most prestigious business schools in France. He started his career in his father’s company before venturing into the retail industry, where he worked for various companies, including François Pinault SA and CFAO. He then joined Kering in 1987 as an intern and worked his way up through the ranks.
In 2005, Pinault became the CEO of PPR, which later became Kering after a corporate restructuring. He played a pivotal role in transforming the company from a conglomerate that had diversified into industries such as retail, media, and construction into a pure play luxury group that focused solely on fashion and lifestyle. Under his leadership, Kering divested its non-core businesses and acquired iconic luxury brands such as Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and Alexander McQueen.
Pinault is renowned for his commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility. In 2018, Kering became the first luxury group to become carbon neutral, and Pinault is a member of the Board of Directors of the United Nations Global Compact, a non-binding United Nations pact to encourage businesses and organizations worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies.
In addition to his role at Kering, Pinault is also involved in various philanthropic initiatives. He founded the Pinault Foundation with his father, which supports contemporary art, and the Francois Pinault Foundation, which focuses on promoting contemporary art, culture, and education. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Enterprise Management in France and a member of the Standards Council of the Better Cotton Initiative.
Pinault is married to actress Salma Hayek, and they have a daughter together. He has two other children from a previous marriage. He is a private person who shies away from the media spotlight and rarely gives interviews. However, he is widely respected in the business world for his visionary leadership and commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility.
