Biography
John Galliano is a British fashion designer who was born in Gibraltar in 1960. He grew up in London and attended Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, where he studied Fashion Design. After his graduation, he began his career as a designer and quickly gained recognition for his bold and avant-garde designs.
In 1984, Galliano launched his own label, which became known for its theatricality and use of unconventional materials. He became known for his ability to mix historical references with modern elements, creating designs that were romantic and whimsical.
In 1995, Galliano was appointed as the Creative Director of Givenchy, a position he held until 1996. It was during his time at Givenchy that he gained international recognition and his designs were worn by celebrities such as Madonna, Princess Diana, and Bjork.
In 1997, Galliano was appointed as the Creative Director at Christian Dior, where he stayed until 2011. During his time at Dior, he became known for his theatrical runway shows, which often featured elaborate sets and stunningly beautiful designs. He was instrumental in the revival of the brand and helped to make it one of the most iconic and successful fashion houses in the world.
In 2011, Galliano was fired from Dior after making anti-Semitic remarks in a Parisian cafe. His reputation was severely damaged and his career was put on hold for several years. He eventually made a comeback in 2014 when he was hired by the Russian fashion brand L’Etoile to design a collection.
In recent years, Galliano has continued to work in the fashion industry, designing collections for Maison Margiela and his own eponymous label. He has also worked on several collaborations with other brands, including working as a creative consultant for Italian luxury brand Tod’s.
Throughout his career, Galliano has won numerous awards for his contributions to the fashion industry, including the British Designer of the Year Award four times. He is known for his masterful designs and his ability to push the boundaries of fashion, making him one of the most important and influential designers of his generation.
