Biography
Karl Lagerfeld was a German fashion designer and creative icon who was born in Hamburg in 1933. He was best known for his work as the creative director of Chanel, a position he held for over three decades. He was also a notable figure in the fashion industry, having worked at major fashion houses such as Fendi and Chloe, among others.
Lagerfeld began his career in fashion as an apprentice at Balmain. He later joined the house of Jean Patou as a design assistant, before moving to designer Pierre Balmain in 1958. In 1963, he moved to Rome to work for the luxury brand Tiziani, and spent several years designing for the label.
In 1965, Lagerfeld began his longstanding relationship with Fendi as their creative director of fur and ready-to-wear collections. It was during this time that Lagerfeld began his work with Chanel, having been recruited to resurrect the iconic French brand. Lagerfeld’s impact on the brand was significant, and he is credited with transforming Chanel from a declining label to a global powerhouse.
Throughout his career, Lagerfeld was known for his sharp wit and fearless commentary on the fashion industry. He was often quoted in the media, offering his opinions on everything from fashion trends to politics. He was also renowned for his love of cats, having owned several over the years, the most famous of which was Choupette, a Birman cat who was widely regarded as his favourite companion.
Despite his success, Lagerfeld was not immune to controversy. He was criticised for his comments on various subjects, from body positivity to immigration. However, he remained a prominent figure in the fashion industry, and his contributions to the industry were celebrated globally.
Lagerfeld’s influence stretched beyond fashion, and he was a true creative polymath. He was a talented photographer, having shot campaigns for Chanel, Fendi and his own eponymous label. He was also a prolific writer, having penned several books on fashion, photography and culture.
Lagerfeld died in February 2019, aged 85. His legacy lives on through his work, both in fashion and beyond. He will always be remembered as one of the giants of the industry, having made an indelible impact on fashion and culture during his lifetime.
