Biography
California-born fashion designer Rick Owens has made a name for himself in the fashion industry for his avant-garde designs and experimental pieces. Owens was born on November 18, 1962, in Porterville, California. At the age of 16, he moved to Los Angeles to attend the Otis College of Art and Design, where he studied fine arts.
Owens began his fashion career by designing menswear for various companies in Los Angeles. His breakthrough moment in the fashion industry came in 1994 when he launched his eponymous label. Owens’ designs are known for their dark, gothic, and often unstructured look. He describes his aesthetic as “glamorous grunge.”
In 2003, Owens moved to Paris after being invited to present his collection at the Paris Fashion Week. Owens has showcased his collections at the event ever since. Owens has been praised for his designs, which are often unconventional and challenge traditional ideas of beauty. His work is a reflection of his fascination with subcultures, particularly those related to punk and goth.
Owens has won several awards for his contributions to the fashion industry, including the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award in 2017. He has also collaborated with a range of brands, including Adidas, Moncler, and Birkenstock. Owens’ collaboration with Birkenstock in 2018 led to a reimagining of the classic Arizona sandal, and the collection was a massive commercial success.
