Valentino studied fashion design at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was later hired by designer Jean Dessès. In 1959, Valentino moved to Rome and established his own fashion house. He soon became recognized for his vibrant and ornate designs, which were often worn by celebrities and high-profile individuals.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Valentino’s fashion house continued to grow in popularity. His designs were worn by famous actresses like Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, and Jackie Kennedy. He also introduced the color “Valentino red,” which has become synonymous with his brand.
In 1998, Valentino sold his fashion empire to the Italian conglomerate, Holding di Partecipazioni Industriali (HdP). He retired in 2008 after showing his final collection during Paris Fashion Week. However, his brand continues to be a staple in the fashion industry.

Valentino has also been involved in philanthropy throughout his career. In 1991, he founded the Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum, a digital museum that celebrates his past collections. Additionally, he has supported numerous charitable causes, including the American Foundation for AIDS Research and the Italian Red Cross.
Today, Valentino remains one of the most influential designers in the fashion industry. He resides in his expansive and lavish Villa Valentino in Rome. Despite his retirement, his legacy and brand continue to be celebrated in the fashion world.
