Biography
Virginie Viard is a French fashion designer who was born on May 26, 1962, in Lyon, France. She grew up in a creative family, surrounded by art and fashion. Her mother was a seamstress, and her father owned a cosmetic company. As a child, she was always interested in fashion and clothing, often creating her designs and outfits.
In 1983, Viard graduated from the École Boulle school in Paris, where she studied fashion design. After graduating, she worked as an intern at fashion house Chanel, where she later became an assistant to Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director of Chanel.
Viard worked alongside Lagerfeld for more than 30 years, helping with the development of each Chanel collection. She played a significant role in the design of individual pieces, fabric sourcing, and the organization of runway shows. Some of her notable designs include the Chanel Coco Crush jewelry collection and the Chanel Coco Cuban collection.
In February 2019, Viard was named Chanel’s artistic director. She succeeded Lagerfeld, who had been with the fashion house since 1983. Viard’s appointment made her the second person, after Lagerfeld, to hold the position of artistic director of Chanel.
As artistic director, Viard is responsible for the overall vision and creative direction of the Chanel brand. She oversees the development of collections, from design to production, and collaborates with artists, photographers, and musicians to create unique experiences for the Chanel customer.
In October 2019, Viard presented her first collection as artistic director, the Chanel Spring/Summer 2020 runway show, held at the Grand Palais in Paris. The collection showcased Viard’s vision for Chanel, with a focus on classic silhouettes, feminine detailing, and bold pops of color.
Viard is known for her close attention to detail and her ability to interpret Lagerfeld’s vision while adding her unique touch. She is also committed to the craftsmanship and traditions of the Chanel brand, ensuring that each piece reflects the house’s signature style while also pushing the limits of creativity and innovation.
In 2020, Viard’s creativity and ability were put to the test when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the Chanel Métiers d’Art show scheduled for Beijing, China. Instead, Viard created a new collection titled “Paris-31 rue Cambon 2019/20 Métiers d’art,” inspired by the iconic Parisian address of Chanel’s headquarters. The collection was presented in a short film, showcasing each piece in a creative and innovative way.
Viard’s dedication and passion for Chanel make her an essential figure in the fashion industry. She continues to inspire and lead the brand into the future, honoring Chanel’s rich heritage while also creating new and exciting collections that reflect the current cultural moment.
