Karla Otto’s The Independents has recently expanded its reach in the fashion and luxury industry with yet another significant acquisition. The group, which was formed in 2017 through the merger of PR agency Karla Otto and event organizer K2, has now acquired US creative agency Prodject.

Prodject is renowned for its expertise in organizing major events in the fashion, art, and culture sectors. One of its most notable accomplishments includes the prestigious Met Gala charity event in New York. While the financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed, The Independents has stated that it now holds a majority stake in Prodject.

One key emphasis made by The Independents is that Prodject will continue to operate autonomously, with no changes to its staff or offices. The group believes that there are significant synergies between the partners, and their complementary skills will enable them to better serve their clients holistically. Additionally, this acquisition further solidifies The Independents’ position in the US market.

Isabelle Chouvet, the CEO of The Independents, expressed her excitement about the acquisition, highlighting the importance of the US market for their clients and considering Prodject as the perfect partner. Chouvet believes that this collaboration positions The Independents as the largest global creative network in the industry, providing them with the necessary resources and vision to shape its future.

Prodject was established in 2011 in New York by Keith Baptista, Jihye Song, and Tobias Armstrong. The agency offers comprehensive event organization and brand consulting services, starting from the initial concept to execution and content strategy. Some of Prodject’s notable clients include Cartier, Gucci, Chanel, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Khaite, and the Met Gala. The agency has also been responsible for organizing events like MADE Fashion Week in New York and the ‘Art + Film’ charity gala in Los Angeles.

Following the acquisition, Keith Baptista, Jihye Song, and Tobias Armstrong will join the board of directors of The Independents. The partnership aims to leverage Prodject’s expertise to enhance the agility and responsiveness of The Independents’ global network, which currently consists of 13 international offices.

This acquisition marks the fourth one for The Independents since its inception. In 2018, the group acquired luxury communication agency The Qode based in Dubai, followed by the purchase of global influencer marketing platform Lefty and Parisian event producer Bureau Betak, including its digital subsidiary Bureau Future in 2021.

As of 2022, The Independents employs 600 individuals and generated a revenue of $350 million (€329 million), marking a 50% increase from the previous year. With offices in major fashion capitals such as Milan, London, Paris, New York, and Tokyo, the group is well-positioned to continue its growth and make a significant impact in the industry.
