US luggage and swimwear sales have started to bounce back as travel plans gradually resume following a challenging year for the fashion and accessories industry. Recent data from The NPD Group reveals that both luggage and swimwear sales have shown strong signs of recovery in the past two months, indicating an increase in consumer interest in travel and leisure activities.

In March and April, sales of luggage reached 80% of pre-pandemic levels in 2019, marking significant progress in the market. While the industry has not fully recovered, the upward trajectory is encouraging. Beth Goldstein, an analyst for the accessories and footwear industry at NPD, highlights the rising demand for functional and innovative travel accessories as people gear up for upcoming trips.

Similarly, swimwear sales have also seen substantial gains since December 2020. March 2021 witnessed a remarkable 185% growth in sales compared to the same period in 2020, and even a 32% increase compared to March 2019. This surge in swimwear sales reflects the broader increase in consumer interest in travel as pandemic-related restrictions are gradually lifted.

A recent consumer survey conducted by NPD in May revealed that around one-third of US consumers anticipate a return to their pre-pandemic travel behavior in the next three months. Another quarter of respondents expect to resume their usual travel habits within four to six months. These findings underline the growing optimism and eagerness among consumers to embrace leisure and business travel once again.

It is worth noting that the travel accessories market experienced a significant loss of $1.8 billion in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions. Nevertheless, the signs of recovery in luggage and swimwear sales demonstrate the industry’s resilience and ability to bounce back as travel gradually resumes.

As travel plans start to pick up, consumers are actively seeking functional and innovative travel accessories to enhance their experiences. The demand for high-quality luggage and stylish swimwear is expected to continue rising in the coming months. This presents an opportunity for travel and fashion brands to capitalize on the trend by offering products that cater to the evolving needs and preferences of travelers.

Overall, the rebound in US luggage and swimwear sales is a positive indication for the fashion and accessories industry. With the resumption of travel and growing consumer confidence, the market is poised for further growth and recovery. Manufacturers and retailers should adapt their strategies to meet the changing demands of travelers and leverage the opportunities presented by the resurgence of the travel industry.
